MAPS Bird Banding Continues

CAS is continuing to do bird banding for MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area this summer. Two successful banding days have been accomplished but the lovely rain flooded out the two additional work days of June. Vanessa Melton reports that once the water levels recede, the team will clean the mud and muck off the mist net poles with the banding on July 6, 11, 20, and 25 beginning at 6:45 am. Yes, 6:45 am to have the pleasure of banding woodland species. Look for the hearty souls in the last parking lot at Pool 12 at Eagles Bluffs Conservation Area. See you out there!  Contact Vanessa Melton at 573-864-3905/ vanndawn@yahoo.com.

Saved in the nick of time is the way that Kathleen and Harold Anderson

describe their adventure at the Albert Area on June 11th. As they approached the bluebird houses, Kathleen spotted a snake climbing the pole to a enter one of the houses.  Harold rushed to find a tool to shoo the snake off; however, in the meantime Kathleen saw the need for immediate action. Pulling on the snake’s tail just as it entered the nest, Harold returned with a tool.  Opening the house, they were able to pull the snake out with it dropping to the ground disappearing into the grass.  Five swallow babies were a little flattened but saved in the Anderson’s nick of time! Thanks.

Chimney Swift Tower Project

Well, the chimney swift tower is finally set in stone, or concrete states Vanessa Melton. The group had their third workday, with one of many to go. After the bottom 1/3 of the tower was set in place we poured concrete in a form around it.

the tower was set in place, the concrete was poured to form the base of the structure (see picture below). The tower will eventually be 14 feet tall, so this was a very important step in the building process. Join the group for the next workday, July 27th at 1 pm at Wild  Haven where the remaining sections of the tower will be fitted together in its final resting place.  See you out there!  Contact Vanessa Melton at 573-864-3905/  vanndawn@yahoo.com.
